Celebrating a silver anniversary of 25 years serving Lake County, Mission Valley Animal Shelter has come a long way in that time. We incorporated in 1989, offering a referral service and foster care program for three years until a temporary, outdoor shelter was established in Polson. By 1994 a small permanent shelter was constructed at the current location of 36251 North Reservoir Road. Debt-free expansions were completed in 2001 and 2010 leading to the modern, present day facility – a testament to hard work, dedication, tenacity and community support.

In 2004, MVAS opened its thrift store, Seconds 2 Go, next to McDonalds in Polson, which directly helps support the shelter. So whether you have adopted from us, volunteered, served on the board, donated, shopped at the thrift store or supported MVAS in some other way – a huge thank you.

Small non-profit organizations have a history of a 3-year existence before they crumble, so 25 years is worth shouting about. But we still have much work to do — the dark cloud to the silver lining is that so many cats and dogs every day are looking for new homes. This need has been lightened by community support, volunteers and a caring population of animal lovers who would love to see a day when animal shelters are a thing of the past.

In the meantime, we continue to work together to serve the animals and people of the county.

To celebrate, please come join us at Riverside Park Sunday, Aug. 24 from 1– 3 p.m. for refreshments, activities for kids, learn about why pets do what they do, and join other animal lovers to celebrate our community commitment to helping lessen the need of these cats and dogs.

Thank you, Lake County.
