Mistakes cost Maidens in 4-game skid

FRENCHTOWN — Errors were the common denominator in all three of the Maidens’ losses.

The young Maiden team committed eight errors in losses to Corvallis, Frenchtown and Libby. The Maidens started the week with a 6-1 loss to Corvallis Thursday in Ronan and finished the week with a 7-2 loss to the Lady Broncs in Frenchtown. Monday, three Maiden errors led to five unearned runs in a 7-2 conference loss to the Lady Loggers in Libby.

“We’re just making too many mistakes. We’re not being aggressive defensively,” Ronan coach Tom Peterson said. “They’re just so afraid to make a mistake, so they’re just not playing.”

Peterson said that his team is playing tight and over thinking things in the field. The mistakes in the field are magnified by the Maiden’s inability to come up with a timely hit.

“Offensively, we get girls on base and we have the right people up, but we just haven’t came through,” Peterson said. “We don’t have a lot of timely hitting,” he added.

The Maidens stranded 23 runners in the three losses, 13 of them coming in the loss to Corvallis.

Ronan catcher Katie Andrews is one of the few Maidens swinging a hot bat. Andrews went 4-for-4 against Corvallis and picked up a hit against Frenchtown and Libby. Andrews has hit safely in five of the Maidens’ six games.

“(Andrews) just comes to play everyday,” Peterson said.

Bethany Coleman picked up the loss in all three games and dropped to 2-4 on the season. The sophomore has struck out 51 batters in 42 innings of work, but still lacks some consistency, Peterson said.

“She’s young, so she’s not going to bring her best stuff every game. It seems on the day that she isn’t throwing her best stuff are the games that we struggle defensively, so things just kind of snowball,” Peterson said.

After opening the season with two wins, the Maidens have dropped four in a row.

“It’s just the little things that we need to fix that are keeping us away from winning,” Peterson said.
