News from Salish Kootenai Housing Authority

POLSON — A free seminar to help spot and offer protection from scams and financial fraud will be held Oct. 23 at the Best Western KwaTaqNuk Resort and Casino from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. Participants will learn techniques to avoid scams, what the top ten scams are, and what to do if someone has become a victim to one.

The event is being organized through the Flathead Finance Program, a homeownership program out of the Salish & Kootenai Housing Authority that helps clients become mortgage ready through credit counseling, budget management, and homebuyer education.

“It is through this counseling that we find numerous clients, both Tribal and non-Tribal, who have been scammed by some fraudulent organization promising quick fix solutions,” said Micky Snyder, affordable homeownership assistant with the SKHA. “It’s because of this that when we were approached by the Montana CSI and AARP during a housing conference, we decided to partner with them to educate our entire community.”

The seminar is presented by several state and federal agencies, including the National Crime Prevention Association, Montana CSI, AARP, and the Montana Attorney General.

To reserve a spot at the free seminar, call Salish Kootenai Housing Authority at (406) 675-4491, ext. 1517, or AARP toll-free at 1-877-926-8300.
