K     en Weaver was sworn in as Ronan Police Chief Sept. 18.

Weaver is the fourth person to hold his position in the past 14 months, but he and Ronan City Council are optimistic that his leadership can revamp the department that has been plagued with problems in recent months.

“I want to meet, first, with the officers and the department, and find out what direction we need to be going,” Weaver said. “We’ll look at the shift scheduling and make sure we have enough coverage for the citizens.”

Weaver comes to the department after retiring in June 2013 from the Vallejo Police Department in California. He started his law enforcement career with the Solano County Sheriff’s department in 1984. Weaver served 24 years with the City of Vallejo as a corporal, captain, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain. He has held assignments in patrol, crime suppression, SWAT, asset forfeiture, range master and working on a crimes task force.

Weaver was Vallejo’s 1997 Police Officer of the Year. He received a good conduct medal for his service.

Weaver said he has been warmly welcomed by townspeople.

“I’ve been going into stores and they keep telling me ‘We’re so glad you are here,’” Weaver said.

Mayor Kim Aipperspach said he is especially glad to have Weaver, because it will relieve him of serving as the town’s police chief. Aipperspach had been interim chief for the past four months.

“I’ve been waiting for it,” Aipperspach said.

Councilmember Cal Hardy said he looks forward to working with the chief.

“If there are any problems let’s take it one bite at a time,” Hardy told Weaver. “I think all the people here are very community-oriented. If you need any help, if you need more ways to look at it, we’re welcome to help you do that. Don’t feel like you are the lone ranger.”
