POLSON — It was cold but there weren't many complaints from the Polson tennis players as they officially opened their season last week. Heck, they were just glad to be playing some competition.

"It was a great first weekend for the kids. Cold weather was the only negative," Polson head coach Bob Hislop said.

Polson hosted Bigfork and Corvallis on Friday, then hosted Hamilton and Libby on Saturday.

The Polson boys went 2-for-2 in duals, while the Polson girls swept all their duals 4-0.

Kendyall Rochin went undefeated over the two days, beating three strong state-level singles players, plus teaming up with her sister, Kayla, to win a five-set number-one doubles match against Libby.

Audra Engebretson also went undefeated playing singles and doubles over her four matches.

"Matt Roberts had an excellent weekend of play in singles even though he only picked up one win. He played smart and with a little more experience will be a contender in Northwestern A," Hislop said. Shad Giles and Justin Evertz had a "fabulous Friday of tennis," according to their coach by winning competitive matches at number one doubles against Bigfork and Corvallis. But the duo struggled on Saturday morning against Cislo and Benson of Libby, losing in two sets.

Christian McCurdy also put together a great match against Libby getting a win at number three singles.

"With the youth of the boys' and girls' teams, I was very pleased with the level of play over the weekend. The nice part about getting matches (in) is that now we have a lot better idea of what to work on," coach Hislop said.

Polson has another busy week of tennis, travelling to Columbia Falls on Thursday and playing in the Cut Bank Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
