Editor,

As the deadness of cold winter days fade and the warmer breezes of spring sweep across the valley; and all around are the melodious songs of robins and meadowlarks; newborn calves soak up the warmth of sunny skies; the bright blooms of Crocus flowers and the fragrance of the Easter lilies fill our senses, we marvel once again at the seasons of life.

Still, some folks may wonder, why Christians get so excited about Easter. Why do so many people attend joyous Easter celebrations all across the reservation and for that matter, all around the world? Well, its not about the Easter bunny, or Easter eggs, or Easter lilies; there’s a line in God’s Book that says, “This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” (2nd Timothy 1:10, NIV)

If Jesus has really done this (and He has) then He is the greatest Person of history; everyone should be celebrating because death is our greatest enemy and life and immortality our greatest hope.

I’m thinking, somebody will ask, “How has Jesus abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light” (the "light" is God’s Book)? My response; Jesus “destroyed death” in Himself. Death is the result of sin (Romans 5:12). We have all sinned (Romans 3:23). Jesus never sinned (I John 3:5; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15), therefore, death had no claim on Him, nor could death overpower Him (Acts 2:24). Christ stripped death of its power through His sinless life, death and resurrection.

Secondly, Jesus gives “life and immortality” in His people. The Holy Spirit has given spiritual life (2nd Corinthians 3:6b; 1st John 5:11-13) to those who have confessed Jesus as their Lord and Savior; immortality of the body takes place at the resurrection of all Christians (1st Thessalonians 4:16-17; 1st John 3:1-3).

Jesus destroyed death. He gives us spiritual life now and at the resurrection an immortal body.

Is it any wonder that especially at Easter, Christians celebrate Jesus?
