POLSON — The Polson Lady Pirates may have lost a lot off last year's conference champion softball squad, but don't look for any slack in their game.

Gone are both pitchers from last year, as well as a lot of power-hitting, but head coach Larry Smith has a lot of young talent returning to his lineup.

"The Lady Pirates will be right back in the mix for a conference title and will surprise many who feel we are too young," Smith emphasized. "I anticipate PHS to be a top team throughout State Class A softball."

Polson returns a number of experienced players and bring up some sophomores and freshmen who are battled tested in junior varsity and ASA softball.

Senior Staci Benson leads the Lady Pirates as an all-state shortstop who can hit with authority from both sides of the plate.

"Staci is an all-everything player," coach Smith said. "She's a model player that leads by her actions and work ethic. She's a true switch-hitter and excellent defensive glove."

Junior Kayla Duford was an all-conference catcher last year and is has a great defensive glove, bats left and is an aggressive base runner, according to Smith.

Sallie Sams, also a junior, returns to the outfield after a solid season as a sophomore.

"Sallie is a power-hitter with a strong arm and great judgment of the ball off the bat," Smith noted.

Moving into the infield from centerfield is sophomore Riley Kenney.

"Riley is a smart player who knows the game and is a good contact hitter," Smith said.

Junior Kodi Woods will move to centerfield, where her speed will help cover the gaps.

"She is very fast and really developed into a good slap hitter last summer," Smith added.

Kylie Knutson saw some action on varsity as a sophomore last year and is another fast, strong player that bats right- and left-handed, Smith said. He added that sophomores Makaliah Wilson and Ashley Johnson will see a lot of varsity action, too.

"They are both good all-around players with speed," the coach explained.

Polson's pitching arsenal reloads after losing both starters to graduation. Sophomore Shalaina Duford and freshman Martina Marquardt will take over the mound for the Lady Pirates this season.

Last year's squad had a disappointing finish at state, going 1-2 with a lot of stranded runners on the bags. But this year's team will take advantage of its speed and ability to get on base.

"I'm looking forward to having fun with an exciting group of athletes this season," Smith said. "We have speed everywhere, so look for a lot of small-ball offense and closing the gaps quick on defense."

Smith expects Whitefish to be very strong this year and Libby "is always good." He also expects Belgrade to be tough at the state level with a great pitcher on the mound. The Class A state softball tournament will be held in Billings May 27-29.

Polson opens the season today (Thursday) at home against Frenchtown and will next play Friday, April 9 in Whitefish.
