POLSON — Daisy Girl Scout Troop #3327 got a special treat at its March 25 meeting. The 10 first graders met in the Cherry Valley Library.
After a game of “Mother May I,” the Daisies, all wearing their blue aprons, met Deputy Ryan Funke from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Funke parked his patrol car in the Cherry Valley lot and talked to the Daisies about being a law enforcement officer.
“A cop’s job is to serve and protect,” Deputy Funke said.
Funke explained that law enforcement officers help when people are hurt, when things are stolen and to investigate car crashes, just a few of a deputie's duties.
Co-leaders Kelly Heiser and Tessa Hupka lined the girls up so they could peek in Deputy Funke’s patrol car. He obligingly turned on the lights for the girls and even squawked the siren.
Deputy Funke, who’s been a deputy for a year and a half, also showed the girls the radio in his car and other equipment, such as his flashlight, gas mask, hazard materials suit and stop sticks.
Also during their after school meeting, the troop sat in a circle and stuffed plastic Easter eggs with candy and coupons from area businesses. The eggs will be hidden at the Beta Easter Egg Hunt to be held on April 3 at 9 a.m. at Boettcher Park.
The Daisy Troop meets weekly on Thursdays after school.
