POLSON — Winter thawed a little when local runners heated up Polson with the second annual March Meltdown.

Competitors ran or walked the course which started along 7th Avenue and looped around Polson High School. The 10 kilometer racers ran the five kilometer loop twice.

The cloudy weather didn’t hinder the 107 anxious athletes on the cold weekend morning. There were 22 runners who ran the 10 kilometer race, including the oldest runner, Bob Hayes, who is 83.

Six-year-old Taleah Hernandez was the youngest runner to compete in five kilometer the race.

The organizer of the race, Tyana Smith is part of the non-profit organization, Polson Running.

“Our goal is fitness and fun,” Smith said. “(We are) giving people an opportunity to get out there and exercise.”

Polson Running organizes three races per year and donates the money raised in the races to worthy causes.

The proceeds of Saturday’s race will benefit Polson schools’ donation to the Haiti Relief Effort.
