RONAN — November 11 was Veteran’s Day, a day to celebrate veterans and remember those who gave their lives to keep America free.

One veteran honored was Bill Austin, who served in the United States Army and the Air National Guard. At a program and lunch thanking veterans held at Glacier View Christian School, Austin received a hand-stitched quilt from an Ennis group called Quilts of Valor.

“As we sew, love, care and gratitude flow through our hearts and our fingers,” a letter from the group read. “The quilts are to honor, comfort and heal.”

J, Austin’s Great Dane service dog, almost always accompanies Austin, so the Quilts of Valor group also made a quilt for J.

Austin was visibly touched by the tangible sign of honor and caring, and thanked Quilts of Valor.

“My job was doing med evac, and I did 247 med evacs,” Austin said, when he was prevailed upon to speak.

He noted that a sewing group donated quilts for the med evacs.

“I made sure each every one (of my evacs) got one of those quilts,” Austin said. “If truth be told, I’d go (to Vietnam) again in a heartbeat.”
