THOMPSON FALLS — Against Plains it was the first quarter, against Thompson Falls it was the second quarter, but in both cases one slow quarter cost the Bulldogs a chance at a conference victory.

On Friday against the Horsemen in the Doghouse, the Bulldogs fell behind 16-6 after the first quarter and never could recover in a 50-38 loss to the second-place District 7-B team. Saturday in Thompson Falls, Mission was outscored 21-0 in the second quarter en route to a 64-31 loss to the Bluehawks.

After the slow start against the Horsemen, the Bulldogs kept clawing their way back into the game and had cut Plains’ lead to six with 3:30 to play, but Plains center Trent Thompson went 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch, as the Horsemen pulled away for the victory. Thompson finished with 14 points.

Bulldog center Jake Durglo went toe-to-toe with the Horseman center, finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds. Jorren Gies added 10 points and nine boards. In what Mission coach Lloyd Phillips called his best game of the year, senior guard Gui Silva finished with seven points, five assists and four steals.

“For the most part, we played well against a good team and took a step forward,” Phillips said.

The Bulldogs took an early 8-0 lead against the Bluehawks Saturday, after connecting on four of their first five shots, but were outscored 36-2 the rest of the first half and went into the break trailing 36-10.

The Bulldogs went 4-for-37 from the field in the first half and finished the game 12-for-55.

Gies led the Bulldogs with 11 points and Durglo followed with 10 points.

With the loss to the Bluehawks, the Bulldogs dropped to 5-12 overall and 2-8 in conference and finished tied with Thompson Falls and Eureka for fourth place in District 7-B. Because of lots drawn before the season, the Bulldogs will be the fifth seed at the district tournament in Libby. They open the tournament against Eureka Thursday at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs split their season series with the Lions.
