It all started with a front page story in the Oct. 29 Valley Journal, Sherlee Santorno said.

The article was about the Bread Basket food bank in Ronan struggling to keep groceries on their shelves.

Santorno had just been asked to coordinate the Mission Valley Cruisers Christmas party. So she talked to the Cruisers, and they decided to bring food items to the party in lieu of gifts.

“One of our members saw that the Ronan food bank was short of food and money. We talked it over, and we thought we’d like to help,” said Mike Lee, Mission Valley Cruisers president.

At the end of the festivities, the Cruisers had gathered 350 pounds of groceries and $110 in cash for the Bread Basket.

“We felt pretty good about it,” Lee said.

Bread Basket Director Sherri McDonald said she was very impressed with their generosity, because it was their Christmas presents to each other.

“Instead of buying presents, they bought food for us,” McDonald said.

“We have so much to learn from each other,” Santorno said.
