At least two more months until official spring...how are you doing? I am happily retired and don’t ‘have’ to get out much, though the main roads have been nicely cleared. I have a good supply of DVD’s and friends online to play words games with, as well as much available to sort through and toss-if-I-can. It is beautiful to look out at the sometimes-blue sky and everything covered by snow. At 40 degrees currently, there are often sounds of ice and snow chunks falling around the house.

Our cook, Jen Hammond, is keeping us well fed with chicken soup, corn bread and other comfort foods. Thursday it was delightful to come in to the fragrance of giant homemade chocolate-chip cookies. I hadn’t realized what a treat that is for many people.

Any age is welcome to join in on Mondays at 5 p.m. and noon every Thursday for tasty meals at the center.

Here’s the menu for the month:

• Thursday, Jan. 22:  beef stew, fry-bread

• Monday, Jan.  26: fried chicken, coleslaw

• Thursday, Jan. 29: wraps, potato salad

There’s always fruit, veggies, bread and dessert with the meals.

We were pleased to receive a call from Joyce Siers, who turned 81 last Thursday. She was reporting in from her home in the Columbia Falls Veterans Home and is always happy to hear from old friends. Joyce and Don were very important members for many years and are still missed at the center.

Delene Tufly is getting around very well after deciding to have both knee replacements done at one time. We are all grateful, along with her, that she’s been able to recuperate so well this winter.

During the school Christmas break, Jim Barnes went with daughter Karen McCullough and grandson David to Tennessee to perform a renewal of wedding vows for his son Kevin and his wife. It was their 25th anniversary. What a special occasion. Happily, Jim and group had no excitement with their travel.

Remember, it’s a good time to call or visit friends who may not be able to get out, or get groceries, or just could use a friendly voice. I especially enjoy feeding the multitude of birds, which have discovered a good dining place on my deck.
