News from the Polson Police Department

POLSON — During 2014, Polson Police officers investigated 32 stolen vehicles or vehicles whose use was not authorized by the owner, according to the Polson Police Officer Michelle Scott, who compiled information for the Polson Police Department Facebook page.

Five adult male suspects were arrested involving 10 different vehicle thefts, according to Scott’s statistics. Investigations revealed Male A was involved with four vehicles, Male B and Male C were involved with two vehicles each and Male D and Male E with one vehicle each. Two more arrest warrants are in the queue. The males are unassociated with each other.

Of the 32 stolen vehicles:

• Four were reported stolen by another city or state and were recovered in Polson

• Seven were borrowed or mistakenly borrowed by a friend or family member. At the request of the vehicle owner, no charges or arrests were made

• 24 were unlocked with key in the ignition or inside the vehicle

• One was started with a tool

• 17 were stolen during the colder months of October, November and December while owners were warming up their vehicles

• 32 vehicles were recovered during traffic stops, abandoned, discovered by the owner watching it drive by or recognized and reported by friends

• One cargo trailer is still missing

In addition to vehicle damages, owners also reported stolen guns, knives, house keys, cash, purses, wallets, tools, electronics, vehicle and insurance registration, cameras, cell phones and other personal items left inside the vehicle.

Polson Police encourage everyone not to leave his or her vehicle unattended, especially during cold weather months. Vehicles left running, unlocked and unattended are quick and easy targets for thieves, according to the website.

“While we strongly discourage leaving running vehicles unattended, you could consider using a spare key ring and a key fob to lock the vehicle,” the website said.

Further information on the PPD website said to report a stolen vehicle, a resident should report it to the police immediately, and know the license plate number and fuel level.
