ST. IGNATIUS – St. Ignatius Town Council agreed Feb. 3 to advertise for the rest of the month for police chief candidates, after receiving only two applications for the position in an initial search for applicants.

“I’d like to put it out one more time,” Councilmember Ray Frey said. “Let’s see if we can get more. Meanwhile, notify these two people that they are in the running, but we are trying to get more people.”

The police chief position has seen a revolving door of faces for the past few years, with the most recent chief, Charles Kuczynski, leaving the job because of an unexpected and aggressive bout of cancer at the beginning of December 2014, after a handful of weeks on the job. Kuczynski died in mid-December from the illness.

The town currently has a part-time officer that made it through an intense round of questioning by the town council in an evaluation at the end of his probationary period in January. At the end of that meeting, the town council called for regular performance reviews of the part-time officer.

Councilmembers said they will leave the application open once more, but then they will likely interview whoever has applied.

“If there aren’t any more bites, we will interview those two,” Councilmember Annie Morigeau said.
