The old saying goes, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.” I sometimes think the opposite is actually true: what hurts you are the things you don’t know. So that begs the question, how can I know what I don’t know?

Aha! You’re so smart… I knew you were going to ask yourself that. Well for starters you can read this newspaper from front to back and I’m sure you’ll be confronted with all sorts of new information. This is a good first step in learning something you previously didn’t know ... from articles that inform you to feature stories that touch your heart or to the letter to the editor that maybe makes you shake your head. Perhaps you like the beautiful photography that lifts you up, even if just for a moment. If you have kids - we have sports. If you need justice - we’ve got courts. And last but certainly not least, if you have a business we are the tool for informing the public.

Now speaking to that last statement, I could talk about how large our readership has grown over the years or the big jump in our online following or how nice it has been to reach people with breaking news via social media, but I don’t believe that gets to the core of what I mean.

What makes us a powerful tool is the strong relationship we have built with our community, how we conduct ourselves, the sense of ownership people have in what we do, the things that are not tangible, not easy to prove, that can’t be placed on a chart for display. You simply feel them and know them to be true. Thanks to our community embracing this locally owned newspaper, we in turn have much to offer our advertisers.

I would venture to say that I’m the luckiest person in Montana. No I haven’t won the lottery or dug up a huge gold nugget, but I do find treasures everywhere I look. I may not have everything and that’s okay with me. I have the love of my family, good friends and we’ve found a community that embraces the good in people more often than not - and that makes me happy. May you too find the right tools for success and happiness here in the Treasure State.
