Lake County Pachyderms

POLSON — It’s called the “silent epidemic” and affects older Montana hunters who become deaf or hearing impaired to the point where they require powerful hearing aids. Two bills introduced in the current Montana legislature (SB 295 and HB 250) would allow the use of firearm noise suppressors while hunting, thus protecting the hearing of all hunters.

The passage of this legislation would allow Montana to join the 34 other states where hunters may use firearm noise suppressors.

Although called “silencers,” a suppressor on a high-powered rifle is anything but silent; the noise is just below the threshold for hearing damage. Zach Underwood, NRA rifle and pistol instructor, will demonstrate how much a suppressor (or silencer) can cut the gun blast of not only rifles, but also handguns in a Power Point presentation at the Friday, March 27 meeting of the Lake County Pachyderm Club.

He will show what a suppressor looks like, how it works, and steps a purchaser must follow to buy a suppressor. He also will show various types of hearing protection for hunters. Please come to the meeting to learn about the cause and prevention of the “silent epidemic” and facts about gun “silencers” in general.

Pachyderms meet in the Polson Rural Fire Hall on Regatta Road in Polson beginning at noon. Bring your lunch.
