PABLO — Two Eagle River hung right with Valley Christian for three quarters, but ran out of steam in the final quarter in a 71-33 loss at home Thursday.

In a tough and physical game, Two Eagle River coach Mark Shackelford said his team played their best three quarters of the year and went into the final period trailing the Class B team only 45-30. Early in the fourth quarter, Jaylen Carpentier, the Lady Eagle’s 5-foot-9 center, was sent to the bench with her fifth foul. Carpentier finished tied for the team lead with eight points and contained Valley Christian’s leading scorer on defense. Without Carpentier patrolling the middle, Beth Kesler, Valley Christian’s 6-foot center, was free to run wild and scored 14 of her game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter as Valley Christian outscored Two Eagle 26-3 to runaway with the 71-33 victory.

Senior Adele Frost finished with eight points and helped Two Eagle manage Valley Christian’s full-court press.

“I was really happy how we handled the press. It didn’t seem to bother us,” Shackelford said.

Karsyn Wilder finished with seven points and Sam Ness added five.

In a 57-28 conference loss to Hot Springs at home Saturday, the Lady Eagles only trailed the Savage Heat by five at the end of the first but were outscored 24-8 in the second quarter and went into the locker room at halftime trailing 35-14.

“We played fairly well in the first quarter, but then we made a couple of mistakes and kind of shut down,” Shackelford said. “We weren’t only playing against a great team, but we were also fighting against ourselves.”

Hot Springs used a 2-3 zone on defense, congesting the middle and daring the Lady Eagles to shoot the outside shot, which wouldn’t fall for the Lady Eagles.

Frost led Two Eagle River with nine points. Sam Ness pitched in with six and Carpentier finished with five. Both Tiana Ness and Tashina Malatare scored four points.

The Lady Eagles (1-7, 0-3) will stay at home, playing Noxon Friday and Philipsburg Saturday.
