POLSON — Three young voices led the student body in singing “The Star Spangled Banner” to kick off the Linderman Elementary School talent show.

Singing the national anthem beautifully were Lucy Violett, Meridian Weidman and Bridger Seifert. Other participants clutched their music, straightened their good dresses and shirts and fidgeted as they waited their turns.

About 25 acts — singers, violinists, basketball players, bongo drummers, pianists, gymnasts, readers and cup musicians — took the floor and presented their various talents.

Linderman music teacher Mark Brookman helped out, operating the sound system, adjusting microphones and reassuring kids with stage fright.

Brookman said almost 200 students tried out for the talent show, usually in music class.

“Some of them winged it, and some of them practiced,” Brookman said.

Principal Tim Finkbeiner said the school has a talent show every year.

“We work really hard on our academics at Linderman, and we want to shine a spotlight on the kids’ other talents,” Finkbeiner said.

It’s very important for kids to practice getting up in front of a crowd, something Finkbeiner said he struggles with.

Finkbeiner helped out a Linderman student whose parents were unable to attend the show. The student was so upset that she wasn’t going to perform, so Finkbeiner used his phone to video her performance so her parents could see it.

In addition to the talent show, Linderman honored the many volunteers who give hours of their time in the classroom making Linderman a wonderful school.
