Sluggish 3rd quarter sinks Scarlet in Superior

SUPERIOR — The Scarlets couldn’t overcome a disastrous third quarter in a 46-30 loss to the Lady Bobcats in Superior Saturday.
In their first game back from the Christmas break, the Scarlets took a 17-16 lead into the second half, but only connected on one field goal in the third quarter and were outscored 18-5 in the decisive quarter.
“Part of it was we didn’t shoot well. And part of it was we turned the ball over and let them get steals, which led to easy baskets,” Arlee coach Richard Bachmeier said. “We rattled a little bit. It was one of those things where everything we put up wouldn’t go in and everything they did would.”
The Lady Bobcats’ aggressive defense not only led to Scarlet turnovers, it also led to fouls, but the Scarlets weren’t able to capitalize on the Lady Bobcats indiscretions. The Scarlets finished 12-for-33 at the line with most of their misses coming in the second half.
Bachmeier, who said the team shoots around 70 percent at the foul line at practice, was at a loss to why his team can’t do it during a game.
“It’s something we’ll have to work on and keep working on...part of it is their youth. They get a little tentative and lack the confidence that they’ll have later on,” Bachmeier said.
The Scarlets had a modest three-game win streak before the loss to Superior. During the win streak they averaged 49 points and looked like they were starting to hit their offensive stride, but the Scarlets’ offensive touch was nowhere to be found Saturday.
“We didn’t get any scoring off of our bench and our starters didn’t shoot well,” Bachmeier said.
The Scarlets shot less than 20 percent from the field and only four Scarlets scored, with none of them finishing in double figures.
“They got good looks. It wasn’t a matter of them taking bad shots. It was just one of those days, where we couldn’t buy a basket,” Bachmeier said.
Freshman Kristyn Adams led the Scarlets with nine points. Melissa Ivanoff added eight. Chelsea Allaire finished with seven points and Mahalia Hendren added six.
Despite the cold shooting, the Scarlets defense held them in the game until the third quarter, when Bachmeier said his team had a little let down.
“I figured we have games like this. We knew we’d have bumps in the road. This was one of those bumps we have to use as a learning experience and go on from there,” Bachmeier said.
It doesn’t get any easier for the 3-2 Scarlets. They travel to Charlo Thursday and host Hot Springs Friday.
