Polson and Ronan Mission Mountain Enterprise athletes have been working hard to prepare for the Montana State Special Olympics in Missoula May 19-22.
Coaches take the athletes to the Mission Valley Aquatic Center, the Polson High School and Linderman School tracks and to area bowling alleys to practice, according to Sean Wilkinson, MME local program coordinator.
Special Olympics coaches need to be qualified in different events, Wilkinson said, and coaching is becoming more mainstream.
The Special Olympics Torch Run came through Lake County Friday and Monday, making a weekend stop in Polson on its way to Missoula.
The torch was carried by law enforcement and a variety of volunteers along the course.
The regional event was held April 22-24, where swimmers, bowlers, walkers, runners and bocce ball players recently competed in Missoula.
Nearly one dozen of those athletes are now heading to State.
