POLSON — The Ronan Chiefs had a good run to open their Saturday dual in Polson, but came up just short to the Pirates.

Polson won the dual 46-39, despite Ronan's strong start.

Shelby Grant opened the dual with a win by pin at 130 pounds to start a six-match run by Ronan, which won five of those by pin.  The Chiefs also won at 189 before Polson swept the remaining matches all the way through heavyweight and from 98 to 125.

Two of those wins were by forfeit in weights Ronan didn't fill, but Polson also won five matches by pin to almost match Ronan's six pins.

"We knew this was going to be a tight dual, and it was going to come down to bonus points. We just gave up too many pins," Ronan head coach Dustyn Azure said. "If we want to have any chance of winning duals, we can't give those up — it's tough enough giving up 12 points in forfeits at every dual."

Ronan's Dilan Starkel and Dustin Goldsby had good matches. Starkel won the 140-pound match by pin over Mike Devlin at 5 minutes, 27 seconds, while Goldsby followed with a pin over Chris Cote in 4:32 at 145.

"We were impressed with Dilan Starkel and Dustin Goldsby in this dual," Azure emphasized. "This is the best I've seen Dilan wrestle in a while. It was good to see Dilan finally relax and just have fun out there. If he keeps this up he is going to be very tough to beat."

The coach added that Goldsby finally wrestled up to his capabilities.

"(Goldsby) wrestled the same way he does in the practice room and we have been waiting for him to carry this over to the competition level," Azure noted.

The Chiefs will have a busy weekend hosting the Western Montana Duals in the Ronan Event Center on Friday and Saturday.
