MISSOULA —To inspire teens across the country to engage in creative activities throughout the summer, the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists and Writers has launched its Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Summer Series, featuring a national workshop series and several creative challenges to encourage students in grades 7–12 to share their voice and engage with their creative peers. These free workshops take place through partnerships in communities across the country.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Summer Series includes writing workshops and open mic readings, inviting students in grades 7–12 to explore and develop their craft through professional mentorship, and providing opportunities for students to perform their work in a fun, inclusive and supportive environment. Students in attendance will have the opportunity to flex their imaginations through interactive group work and instruction led by Pend d’Oreille poet and University of Montana professor, Heather Cahoon (Elk Thirst, 2005).

Participants are also encouraged to learn more about and submit their work to the 2016 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the longest-running, most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative teens in the United States, presented by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. This year’s Awards open for submissions on Sept. 16. Award alumni include Robert Redford, Truman Capote, John Lithgow, Ken Burns, Joyce Carol Oates, Audrey Niffenegger, Lena Dunham, Zac Posen, and more, all of whom won when they were teens.

The 2015 Summer Series poetry workshop in Missoula is made possible by support from the Alliance, Montana Writing Project and Fact and Fiction. Workshop details are below. A full list of opportunities through Summer Series is available at www.artandwriting.org/summerseries.

Workshop details:

All Missoula-Area teen poets and writers are invited to join the Montana Writing Project for a poetry workshop and reading at Fact and Fiction Bookstore, 222 N. Higgins Ave.,  on Aug. 13 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Don’t let the heat stifle your creativity. Join us for a poetry workshop and open-mic reading.

Immediately following the workshop will be an open-mic in which participants can share work created during the workshop or other in-progress or finished pieces. (Priority on the open-mic will be given to workshop participants.) Participants will also learn how to enter the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. For more information contact  Heather Cahoon at: Heather.Cahoon@mso.umt.edu or 406-824-7526.
