RONAN — The best way to keep from being a victim of crime in Ronan these days is to lock your car doors, according to Police Chief Ken Weaver.

Weaver heard concerns, visited with community members, and gave crime prevention tips at his monthly “Coffee with the Chief” meeting on July 21, aimed at improving public relations with the citizens of Ronan.

In the past month the police department has seen a rash of thefts from unlocked cars between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m., Weaver said.

The thieves have netted guns, wallets, credit cards, and fishing poles, but the culprits aren’t particularly ambitious. In only one instance was a window broken.

“If the car is locked, they will move onto another car that is not locked,” Weaver said.

Some video footage of the suspected thieves has been obtained that Weaver hopes will help nab the wrongdoers.

Weaver said the recent certification of one officer and pending certification of another will also help keep crime down. He also intends to ask for two more officers in upcoming budget meetings. The force has a staff of four currently.

Weaver encouraged the public to contact him or his officers by stopping by the police station with their thoughts or concerns about improving public safety.
