Annual Buttercup Run draws hundreds

ARLEE — To the south, clouds hung low, skimming the treetops covering Evaro Hill. But the early afternoon sun pierced through the overcast sky, uncovering a brilliant blue sky and warm sun as runners from near and far flocked to the 2012 Buttercup Run in Arlee to bask in the spring day.
“It was a really good (turnout),” said Friends of Arlee board member Cherie Garcelon. “It was sunny and it was just beautiful. It was perfect weather.”
And maybe it was those pleasing temperatures that drew people out to participate. Garcelon said a higher than usual number of runners signed up for late registration With less than a hour before the start of the race approximately 190 runners decided to compete. A total of 390 runners participated in the annual event.
The Buttercup Run is a fundraiser for the Friends of Arlee Schools, Inc., which uses the money raised to create scholarships for Arlee High Schools students and provide grants for Arlee teachers to buy supplemental instructional materials. According to Merrill Bradshaw, Friends of Arlee board member, the organization usually provides scholarships for five to eight students each year. Last year eight students received scholarships, and in 2010 six students were awarded money.
