RONAN – Dozens of families came out to see  if they would win a prize at the Ronan Library’s Summer Reading Program Grand Finale at Bockman Park on Saturday.

“We had a lot of great participation this year,” Librarian Michelle Fenger said of the 393 people who read 12,405 hours this summer. “It’s always great to hear from parents that the kids are reading more in the summer because they are really excited about a certain prize.”

In addition to the large prizes handed out Saturday, Library Assistant Kathi Brown said her favorite part of the program was seeing children light up with joy as they received smaller prizes for reaching reading milestones throughout the summer.

Charlo teen Shelby Tryon read 32 hours during the summer.

“It was fun,” she said, adding that some of the reading was done about her new alpacas. Tryon showed them in a first-time exhibit at the Lake County Fair last month.

Abigail Jantz, 12, of St. Ignatius, said she read “so many books she didn’t even know how many” she had tackled during the year. “I just like reading.”

Jantz likes books about animals and mysteries. Combine the two and she is in reading heaven.

Many other children said it wasn’t just prizes that kept them turning pages through the summer.

Tiana Crist,12, of Ronan said she and her siblings are avid readers.

“We’ll pretend to be in the toilet and really be reading,” Crist said.
