ST. IGNATIUS – Mary Leishman was appointed as the new clerk during the town council meeting on Tuesday. After 38 years, Lee Ann Gottfried retired from the position, although she isn’t completely finished with the job. The council voted to hire Gottfried as a deputy clerk to fill in and answer questions.

Town hall hours of operation have also changed. The doors are scheduled to be open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., excluding holidays.

Mayor Charley Gariepy and Police Chief Matthew Connelly are looking for another full-time police officer to add to the staff, which would give the department two full-time officers and one part-time. The interview process starts this week. They received seven applications, but only two were post certified.

“We want someone that has already been to the academy,” Chief Connelly said stating that it takes time and money to send a person to the academy.

Now that school is back in session, Chief Connelly wants folks to know that parking in the roundabout in front of the high school isn’t permitted. The area is used for picking up and dropping off students, and buses can’t get through if cars are parked in the area. He said tickets will be issued.

And he requested that students use crosswalks for safety reasons. The council said the lines will be repainted as soon as paint is available.

The town’s preliminary budget was adopted by the council with no objections from the public. The proposed budget was first heard in July.

Roads around town are smoother after paving was done to fix the rough spots. Public Works Director Scott Morton inspected the job, and he is happy with the work. The next council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6 at 7 p.m.
