Local cross country teams hit the ground running this week, with Polson athletes traveling to the Highlander Invitational in Spokane and teams from Arlee, Charlo, Mission and Ronan competing at the Ronan Invitational.

Polson

SPOKANE — Polson’s girls won the Highlander Invitational team title for the third straight year behind sophomore runner Malia Seeley’s first-place finish in the 2.5-mile combined race. She clocked in at 16 minutes, 50 seconds. Teammate Ryan Harrop, also a sophomore, finished sixth in that race, and freshman Molly Sitter was 11th.

“I was very impressed with how well the girls started off at a smart pace and then moved up into the top 20 in the last mile of the 2.5-mile course,” coach Matt Seeley said. “The most improved runner for the girls was senior Natalee Wheeler, who dropped 12 seconds from her time on the same course last year.”

The meet was the first of the season for Polson after the Sept. 4 Cut Bank Time Trials were cancelled due to weather. The Pirate and Lady Pirate runners will compete at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula on Saturday.
