On Thursday, the Polson teams swept Frenchtown at home, the girls 4-1 and the boys 2-1. Lady Pirates coach Michael Hewston credited his team with playing “good, solid soccer.”
“We leaned into the long ball a bit too much and were forced to play harder because of it,” he said. “When we possessed we looked good; the ball movement from the front five was pretty impressive at times. It is this team’s strongest point.”
Striker Ashlee Howell scored one for Polson and assisted on all of the team’s other three goals, which came from Amelia Pittsley, Tiara Duford and Janessa Taylor.
In the boys’ game, the Pirates scored all three goals in the 2-1 win, giving one to Frenchtown when a ball bounced off a Polson player and into his own goal. The Pirates’ two points came from Michael Vergeront and Sutton Kanta, who scored off a pass from teammate Michael Mercer.
The Polson squads didn’t fare nearly as well on Saturday in Corvallis, where the defending state champion Blue Devils took down the Pirates 3-0, and the Corvallis girls knocked off the Lady Pirates 4-1.
In the girls’ match, Polson’s lone goal came from Taylor in the first half; after that the Lady Pirates couldn’t get any more past Corvallis goalie Kira Doyle, who blocked 18 of Polson’s 28 shots on goal.
Polson teams will travel to Bigfork on Thursday and Whitefish on Saturday.
