Ronan resident, veteran dies after DUI arrest

RONAN — According to a press release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, Gregory Robert Avila, 22, died Saturday morning, June 23, of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Avila was arrested earlier that same day for driving under the influence and was believed to be an enrolled tribal member. He was processed at Tribal Law and Order, but was transported to his home by the Ronan Police Department after police officers learned that he was not a tribal member. There was no room in the Lake County Jail. A female reported his death shortly after in a 911 phone call.
According to his obituary in the Missoulian, Avila graduated from Ronan High School with honors and immediately joined the Marine Corps, participating in two overseas active duty tours. He was honorably discharged on June 4, 2012.
“Gregory’s immediate family would like to thank family, friends and community for all the love, support and prayers,” the obituary said.
