Arlee Schools staff increased

ARLEE – The Arlee School Board voted to increase staff in the special education department during the regular board meeting with one full time teacher, two elementary aides and one aide in the high school to ensure a smaller student-to-teacher ratio. Funding for the additional staff comes from a supplemental 2013 Impact Aid payment at $54,000 in the elementary and $15,000 in the high school.
Superintendent David Whitesell reported that two unfair labor practices were filed against the district by the Arlee Classified Employees Association concerning negotiations and the use of sick leave. He said the employees were part of the maintenance department.
The board approved a 2 percent increase in pay for non-union and certified employees as part of the yearly negotiations.
The lowest of three bids at $33,000 for new asphalt in the parking lot was approved by the board. Whitesell explained that the asphalt is expensive but needed. Funding is available for the project in the transportation budget.

Principal Jim Taylor returns to the football field this season as the assistant high school coach. Charles Forgey is the junior high head football coach with Duncan Crawford assisting.
After school tutoring is starting back up with Shawna O’Neill and Sarah Stubbs in the junior high and high school. Sibley Ligas, Sue McCay, Karen Smith and Anne Tanner are the elementary tutors. Parents can contact the school if they would like their child to participate. The Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) are also back on the schedule with new direction from teacher Leslie Jackson.
School principals are hosting a community coffee hour on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 9 a.m. for anyone that wants to learn about the school or discuss any issues. The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6:30 p.m.
