News from Mission Valley Back Country Horsemen Club

RONAN — On Oct. 6 Mission Valley Back Country Horsemen Club will be holding its October general meeting and annual membership drive at the VFW Hall in Ronan. We will begin the event at 6 p.m. with a potluck.

This will be followed by a presentation on back country first aid being presented by Dr. Righetti of Polson, a physician in Polson and an avid outdoorsman. He offers a lot of common sense advice, first aid, how to evaluate the situation and the options available, as well as how to work with what you have at hand. He presents a fantastic program.

MVBCH is the local chapter of BCH Montana. Part of our mission statement is to perpetuate the common sense use and enjoyment of horses in Montana’s road less backcountry and to assist the various government agencies in their maintenance and management of said resources. We also educate, encourage and solicit active participation by various members of the general public in the wise and sustainable use of horses and people,

As part of our general meeting, which is held the first Tuesday of every month at the VFW hall in Ronan, we try to have a program that is educational, entertaining, of interest to all of us and at the same time beneficial.

In addition to our general meeting programs, the club offers a variety of educational seminars and clinics to its members. These include Defensive Horsemanship, Saw Safety and Usage, First Aid/CPR, Trailer Backing, Packing, Horse Training From Ground to Advanced, General Tack Maintenance, Knot Tying, etc. In general, if there is something you want to know, there is probably going to be someone in the club that can help you.

So what do we do for fun? Every month, spring through late fall we have some kind of riding activity, be it a trail ride, spring wagon ride, steak ride, fall poker ride, obstacle course or some other training riding/training event. Come try one or all as they are all loads of fun. In the spring, our main focus is the Annual Steak Ride and cleaning three designated trails for the Forest Service in the Lolo National forest on the St. Regis cutoff.

So as you can see, we stay busy in many different ways. We would like to encourage you to attend our October get-together and check us out. If you are interested in maintaining the trails in the high country, we can help you do so, while you, on the other hand, help us in keeping those trails open and giving us a voice with the National Forest Service. It is a win-win situation.
