Mission Valley cross country teams competed this past weekend in the 25th annual Mountain West Classic Cross Country Meet that hosted teams from Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.

St. Ignatius

Varsity athlete Tate Weingart placed 257 out of 413 boys with a time of 18:50 on the 3-mile course.

For middle school boys, Troy Matt placed 22 out of 283 with a time of 12:43 on the 2-mile course.

Middle school girls Mady Currie, Karolyna Buck and Ahni Umphrey came in 38th, 71st and 120th, respectively, out of 241 girls on a 2-mile course.

Coach Chris Eichert couldn’t be more proud of her team.

“All my athletes did such an amazing job,” she said.

Ronan

The Ronan boys competed as a varsity team, despite being short a few runners due to a prior obligation. The course for the race included a revision, which meant runners made the trek up the big hill twice, instead of once this year. The addition seemed to take a toll of some of the runners. Jackson Duffey was the first Ronan boy, placing 152 out of a total of 413 runners, with a time of 17:43, 43 seconds off his personal best of 17 minutes flat.

The next Ronan boy was Nate Dennis who clocked a time of 18:52, also a minute behind his personal best, closely followed by teammate Kiry Detwiler at 18:59.

Rounding out the Ronan Varsity boys were Andrew Koehler, Hunter Peterson, and Aden Birdinground running 20:29, 20:44, and 20:54.

Running JV was Tyler Joachim and Terrell Stump, minus 3 teammates due to prior commitments, so they were unable to get a team score.

The Ronan girls competed in the JV race with top runner Ashley McCready placing 17th overall with a time of 21:44. Teammates Penni Weyant, Kaitlyn Sassaman, and Korrie Frisk, rounded out the girls team. Ronan was unable to get a JV score, missing teammate Tashyna Matt who has been out with strep throat.

This week Ronan cross country will travel to Great Falls for a practice run on the state meet course.

“Our kids haven’t been on this course, so I wanted to let them preview it before the state meet,” head coach Noelle Decker said.

On Saturday, the team travels to Frenchtown for the Frenchtown Invitational.

“Our kids are working hard at practices and we are staying focused on the end of the year goals that we have made as a team and individuals,” Decker said. “What I enjoy about this team, both boys and girls, is that they all have a great work ethic when it comes to practices. They are positive with one another and everyone knows their roles.”
