Pirate football season promising
POLSON – The Pirates have been trooping through early season bumps but a conference victory under the Friday night lights last week leaves the Pirates looking to climb the ranks on the Northwest A’s conference ladder.
After taking a hit against number one ranked Dillon the Friday before, Polson bounced back with fire in their blood giving the Homecoming crowd a dazzling show of victors capturing a shutout with the 37-0 win over Frenchtown.
“First conference game of the year and I thought the kids played well,” Head Coach Scott Wilson said about the Pirates’ performance.
Quarterback Tanner Wilson threw a pair of touchdowns and was 9-13 with 133 yards in the air. On the other end of the throw was Matthew Rensvold who caught both touchdowns and ran one in. Sophomore running back Colton Cote put some grass under his feet with 10 carries covering 126 yards including two touchdowns, one of the end zone high fives came after a 61-yard run.
Though offense puts numbers on the board, it was Polson’s defense that played a key part in Friday’s game, something, according to Wilson, the Pirates have been struggling with.
“We hadn’t played great defensively all year but we played very well defensively last weekend,” he said. “Hopefully we will be able to use that to gain momentum. We’ve got a tough one this Friday; we play Whitefish who is one of the better teams in the state so having that momentum will definitely help.”
Polson’s defense held off Frenchtown from making any kind of progress limiting the Broncs to just 52 rushing yards and 40 in passing. Rensvold led in tackles with three while Tanner Wilson, Jacob Harrod and Jonah Burke all snagged an interception.
With the regular season hitting the half way mark and postseason creeping up just around the quarter, Wilson is looking to make a positive run come playoff time.
“Our goal is to hopefully try to get in at the end of the year into a playoff spot and do the best we can in conference,” he said. “If we can stay healthy and win games going down the stretch here, then we should be able to meet that goal.”
Taking it game by game, the Pirates will meet up with the Bulldogs in Whitefish Friday for some conference action followed by a contest at home, hosting Butte Central Oct. 9.
