BUTTE — In 1952 a handful of Lewistown cowboys planted the seeds for what would eventually become the Northern Rodeo Association. The association had its ups and downs and fell apart in 1957, only to be brought back to life two years later. It went from 91 members the first year to 300 the next, but the real starting point didn’t emerge until 1970 when a new breed of cowboy in the form of educated high school and college students emerged. This change in membership indicated a growing respect for rodeo as not only a form of entertainment, but also a possible career.
Now, in 2015, the NRA is a thriving association and Lake County is proud to be sending 15 contestants to the finals in Butte. The contestants have been participating in rodeos all through the summer season with the hopes of being one of the top 10 money earners in their event, which secures a place at the finals Oct. 8-10.
