ST. IGNATIUS – Josh Blackweasel was officially approved as the new full-time police officer by the town council during their regular meeting, which gives the town two full-time officers and one part-time. Blackweasel began his position on Sept. 13.

The board was questioned about a police officer’s daily schedule. The council explained that officers are paid during meal breaks and break periods because they are always on duty during their shift. It was stated that officers often have to leave a meal if they get a call.

Court cases could soon be heard through Skype. The board hopes to get a low-cost camera for about $10 and utilize existing Internet connections to allow inmates to communicate with a judge.

Council member Daren Incashola explained that when an officer arrests someone they are held in the county jail in Polson. During their court case, they need to be transported back to St. Ignatius.

“This way the judge is here and the inmate can stay there,” he said. “It would save time and money.”

Daniel Thompson was hired as the community librarian. He held the position in the past and was willing to step in and fill it again after the former librarian, Mary Leishman, became the town clerk.

The clerk’s request to utilize online banking was approved to make it easier to print statements and make payments. The board also approved a new computer to make online banking possible.

The board approved a Community Trunk-O-Treat and Chili Cook-Off to be held in the LDS Church parking lot at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. Leishman said that anyone is welcome to decorate a trunk and pass out candy.

“We’ve been doing this the past few years and we want people to feel free to participate,” she said.
