News from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes

FLATHEAD LAKE — The 2015 Fall Mack Days Fishing Event, a fisheries management tool used to reduce the non-native lake trout in Flathead Lake sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, continues through Nov. 15.

As of week five, Terry Krogstad of Kalispell was leading the anglers with a total of 873 lake trout entries and a 15-day average of 58.2. Terry is the only angler with a 15-day average.

The top ten anglers are placed by their best 15 days fished at the end of the event.

As of week five, Mike Benson of Lonepine is in second place with 738 entries. Felix Gauci of Stevensville is third with 658. Benson and Gauci each have 13 days. Bob Stewart of Kalispell is fourth with 452, Phil Meredith of Kalispell is fifth with 426, Richard Kreis of Huson is sixth with 377, Larry Karper of Florence is seventh with 346, Scott Bombard of Missoula is eighth with 310, Bob Christensen of Missoula sits in ninth place with 284, and John Gauci of Florence is at 10th with 271.

In the first five week, 100 tagged lake trout have been turned in. Bob Christensen had a $100 and a $200 tagged lake trout on a recent Friday. George Thompson of Missoula was very lucky the following day, turning in 14 lake trout with two of them being tagged. One tag was worth $500 and the other $100. Several anglers had $100 tagged fish. You can see the list of all names on the website @www.mackdays.com.

Laurie Kries of Huson continues to increase her total. Laurie is in first place in the Ladies Category with 204 fish, followed by Jeanee Mooney of Missoula in second with 91, Julie Vacca of Florence in third with 77, Debbie Pike of Polson is in fourth place with 69, and Brandy Hilde of Missoula is fifth with 65.

Youth lady angler Ellyana Tripp of Missoula is leading the 12-and-under group with 28 fish, followed by Tyler Throop of Missoula in second place and Makenna Garrett of Missoula, both with two fish as of week five.

Also in week five Ayden Tripp is leading the 13-17-year-old category with 18 fish, Garrett Beville of Bigfork is second with eight, Myles Tripp is third with eight fish, Tyler Varga of Kalispell is in fourth place with six fish  and Garett Vaughan of Charlo is in fifth with two fish.

Ralph Johnson spoke up a few years ago and asked if there could be a category for the 70 and older anglers. Thinking it was a good idea it was included in the contest. Ralph jokingly spoke up again the other day and asked if in a few years another category could be added for those 80 and older. It could be a new category in a couple of years for all of you who love to fish. Larry Karper of Florence continues the lead in the 70 and older category with 346 fish, Glenn Hoffman of Missoula is in second place with 164, Jim Hoover of Whitefish is third with 155, Leonard Lewis of Missoula is fourth with 111, and Richard Hembd of Columbia Falls has 82 fish for fifth place in week five.

Old timer Jim Hoover was rubbing a sore spot on the top of his head Sunday after a lure popped loose from a hefty lake trout. The lure flew up and past his partner, landing on Jim’s head and knocking off his hat in the process. Richard, not knowing Jim was hit, started laughing and was only worried about getting the net out to reach the hat in the lake. Richard said later that he felt bad for laughing when he saw the lump on Hoover’s head. You’re never too old to fish and have fun. They were both laughing when they checked in their catch.
