POLSON — The Polson Police Department received a $5,000 check from Polson Wal-Mart on Jan. 20.

According to Erin Melugin, Polson Wal-Mart personnel manager, and Cody Grove, Polson Wal-Mart manager, the money came from Wal-Mart associates volunteering 323 hours to make stockings for children. The volunteer hours qualified the store to receive a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation.

Polson Police Department assistant chief John Stevens said, “We (PPD) are very thankful for the donation. We’ll put it to good use.”

Stevens was seconded by Polson city manager Todd Crossett, who said, “Local government can only do so much … Wal-Mart has been great.”

Stevens also praised Melugin and Officer Chris Wright for coordinating the annual Safety Day at Wal-Mart with 24 to 26 other agencies.

“I make sure everybody shows up,” Wright said, “Erin gets the volunteers and the meals … (she) is a joy to work with, she effortlessly puts things together,” Wright said.

According to Stevens, the police department will decide as a unit the best use for the extra funds.
