ST. IGNATIUS – Leila Marsh, Mission High sophomore, stood in front of more than 300 people in the cafeteria at the Mission School District during this month’s community breakfast on Monday, Dec. 7, to say thank you to local law enforcement.

“We appreciate you both for keeping us safe,” she said to St. Ignatius Police Chief Matthew Connelly and School Resource Officer Clay Shoemaker.

The students created a long banner with blue writing saying, “Mission schools support our local law enforcement.” Students signed the banner before the event, and they took it to the nearby grocery store so many of the community members could sign. The banner was presented to Chief Connelly and Officer Shoemaker.

“I’ve very impressed,” Officer Shoemaker said after the event. “I’m glad to see that they support us.”

This is the fourth year that Shoemaker has worked as an SRO in the school. He attended the event with his family. Connelly took over as the police chief earlier this year with the St. Ignatius Police Department. He is originally from Browning and has worked in law enforcement since 2011.

“Everyone has been supportive,” Connelly said of his new position.

Connelly also wanted to let people know that the St. Ignatius Police Department has a new four-wheel-drive truck.

“We needed a truck in this area,” he said adding that the truck is now road ready.

During the event, community members enjoyed a free breakfast provided by the school. This month the theme of the breakfast was Muffins with Moms, and every month, the school has a different theme. Administrators and teachers use the event to share what’s going on at the school.

“We do this to get the community involved with the school,” Superintendent Jason Sargent said. “It’s always important for the school to have a strong connection with the community to create a successful school.”
