Underclassman Alicia Camel, Lee Camel, and Micalann McCrea are contributing factors to the Ronan Maidens 14-2 season record.

Head Coach Ron Hanson sees other factors included in the teams strengths.

“They have strong team defense, lots of talent, and are putting it to use on the floor,” Hanson said.

Adding to these strengths is sophomore McCrea.

“We are good at communicating and passing the ball around the court,” McCrea said.

Although the leading scorers for the Maidens are underclassmen, Alicia Camel wants to see her seniors get to state.

“None of our seniors have made it to state,” Alicia Camel said. “That is one of our goals … to get them there.”

These seniors include Ashley Peterson, Jordyn Clairmont, and Siliye Pete.

The Ronan Maidens have a near perfect record, however Hanson sees one area of concern.

“We are good but in order to be great we need to be better at rebounding,” Hanson said.

Alicia Camel agrees that rebounding should be a focus in practices.

“I would like to see us work on our rebounding more,” Alicia Camel said. “That is something we need to get better at before tournament time.”

The Ronan Maidens showed their talent in front of a home crowd on Tuesday, Feb. 2 when they took on the Polson Lady Pirates. Lady Pirates’ Nicole Lake put up 19 points to give her team a fighting chance, but it was the Maiden McCrea leading Ronan to a 64-48 non-conference win by adding 22 points.

Thursday, Feb. 4 the Maidens took the court again in an away game against Deer Lodge. Lee Camel led the team with 26 points and Alicia Camel and McCrea combined for 24 points to beat Deer Lodge 57-52.

On Saturday, Feb. 6, the Maidens topped off their third game of the week with a 38-44 victory over Troy in front of supportive hometown fans. Alicia Camel and McCrea both had double-doubles on the night, combing for 25 points and 20 rebounds. Lee Camel added 13 points and 5 rebounds.

Winning these three games, the Maidens are just another step closer to achieving their goals. Last year’s All State Lee Camel is confident that the team can accomplish whatever they set their mind to.

“Be conference champs, be undefeated in conference, win districts, win divisionals, go to state, and finish on top,” Lee Camel said. “That

sounds like a lot … well, because it is.”

Thursday, Feb. 11 the Ronan Maidens host Anaconda for a 6 p.m. game. One week later on Thursday, Feb. 18  the Maidens start their District Tournament in Anaconda.
