ST. IGNATIUS – Sparks from a large burn pile flew onto a stack of hay on Wednesday, March 16, just before 4 p.m. and caught it on fire.

The St. Ignatius Volunteer Fire Department responded to the haystack fire at a sawmill on 60136 Foothill Rd. The haystacks were owned by the folks burning the wood pile. Several buildings, large piles of lumber, and a home were close to the fire.

“We didn’t put it out,” said St. Ignatius Fire Chief Jeremiah Morigeau adding that the hay was lost. “We were there to make sure it didn’t spread.”

Folks at the sawmill were originally burning a large pile of sawdust and wood many feet high and wide when the wind shifted and sent sparks onto the hay bales estimated to be about 100 feet away.

Morigeau said it is legal to burn such a large pile as long as garbage isn’t in it. The wood pile continued to burn throughout the week.
