Spring has sprung and so have the legs of area track athletes. Despite being a sport filled with gut-wrenching races, insane nerves, and not always reaching personal bests, Arlee’s Carly Hergett was more than ready to step onto the tar on Saturday for the Ronan Track Invitational.

“I love this time of year,” Hergett said. “I think the environment of being surrounded by other teams and being able to compete outside are what make it so much fun.”

Hergett, who has already qualified for state in the triple jump and long jump, won the 100-meter hurdle race with a time of 17.28 seconds. She is looking forward to making improvements before her next meet.

“I definitely need to work on coming out of the blocks,” Hergett said. “I also got a little tired at the end, so I need to do some more conditioning.”

Placing second in the 100-meter hurdles was Charlo’s Cheyenne Nagy.

“It felt good to get this first race out of the way. I was nervous,” Nagy said. “I am trying to three-step all the hurdles an entire race. I am really going to work on that.”

Although only a couple track meets into their season, Arlee Assistant Coach Ashley Gaumer likes what she has seen so far from her team.

“We are looking really good early this season,” Gaumer said. “We have a lot of long distance runners out this year, so I am looking forward to watching them get better.”

One of those Arlee long distance runners, Natalie Yocum, placed second in the 3200 and also competed in the 800, 1600, and 4x4 relay.

“We were kind of pushing her today … to see what she can handle,” Gaumer said. “Yocum is pretty tough.”

Track is mentally and physically tough; however, Arlee athletes George Shick and Josie Moulding have found that teamwork helps during races.

“I think, since we all know how tiring a race can be, we cheer each other on more,” Shick said.

Moulding believes that it is also important to be a role model for the younger “tracksters.”

“I feel like it is my job to remember school spirit during the meets,” Moulding said. “It is easy to forget when you are so focused on your own events, but motivating my teammates really helps.”
