The Polson girls and boys tennis teams are in full swing and their experience runs deep. Seniors Marlee Congdon and Shawna Lenz are enthusiastic with the amount of talent the girls squad holds.

“We have a lot of returning players that are really good,” Lenz said. “It is going to be fun to see where we end up at the end of the season.”

Congdon, who placed sixth at state last year, is hoping to better her results this year and knows what it will take to do that.

“My backhand slice needs some work,” Congdon said. “I also could work on my serving. That is something that is always important.”

Polson’s head tennis coach Bob Hislop agrees that the entire groups serving could use some work.

“Having an effective serve in tennis is huge,” Hislop said. “If you hit a weak serve, you will be in the defensive position when the opponent returns that easy serve.”

Hislop would also like to work on the agility of his athletes.

“The better we move our feet the better we play … just like in all sports,” Hislop said.

Polson had a big weekend at home starting with Dillon Friday, April 8. Polson girls defeated Dillon 4-3, with Congdon earning a 6-2 and 6-4 win against Dillon’s Mariah McClure. On the boys’ side, Pirate’s number-one player Collin Kenney played a brutal match against Dillon’s Brad Rakich.

The match went back and forth, but ended with a 6-4 tie breaker in Dillon’s favor. The Polson boys’ team lost the series 5-2.

On Saturday, April 9, Polson Lady Pirate Mollie Lemm won her match against Dillon’s McClure, 6-3 and 6-1, which led the team to another 4-3 win over Dillon. The Polson boys team was looking to redeem their loss the day before against Dillon, but their efforts were not enough. The Pirates lost 5-2 to Dillon.

Later in the day, Polson took on Whitefish. The Polson Lady Pirates continued their winning weekend with a 5-2 victory over Whitefish. Lady Pirate Lenz and her doubles partner, Cassie Carlyle, had a big 7-5, 6-3 win over Whitefish’s Katie Fyall and Anna Peterson. For the Polson boys, it was a different story. Despite playing close matches, they couldn’t pull away with the win. The Pirates lost 5-2 against Whitefish.

Since it is early in the season, Polson Pirate Wyatt DuCharme is looking forward.

“I think we just need to improve in every aspect of the game,” DuCharme said. “We have some good players, we just need to focus on the little things.”

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will head to Columbia Falls on Thursday, April 14 for a 2 p.m. match up.
