ST. IGNATIUS – The cracks in the St. Ignatius Airport runway might soon be smoothed out.

Lake County Joint Airport Board representative Rick Newman reported to the St. Ignatius Town Council during the regular meeting on Tuesday that the airport is putting out bids for contractors to fill in cracks on the runway. They received a grant for the repairs.

Changes are also being made to the St. Ignatius Fly In during this summer’s Good Old Days event.

“We don’t have volunteers,” he said of the pilots that fly airplanes for the Young Eagles project that give children free airplane rides.

Newman said extra restrictions from the Experimental Aircraft Association have made it difficult for pilots to participate in the program.

He added that the helicopter crew that gave rides during the event last year won’t be available due to other responsibilities.

“We will have local aviators and pancakes,” he said of the event.

Newman said a drone has been flying around the airport, and he has received a complaint from a pilot. He said drones are not allowed to fly around the control tower.

He stated that he didn’t have a problem with small aircraft flying at the airport as long as the drone stays away from the airplanes. He said the Federal Aviation Administration investigates drones not following regulations and can fine owners $10,000.

In other news, Public Works Director Scott Morton said that the skate park was recently cleaned. He said a juvenile was arrested for graffiti and was being processed in Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Court.

Council meetings are open to the public and occur every first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall.
