Irrigation board votes to cancel election

LAKE COUNTY — The Flathead Joint Board of Control commissioners voted to cancel the Irrigation District Election during a meeting on Thursday, April 21, with a nine to two vote due to what they claim is a violation of Montana State Election Laws by the Lake County Election Office.

The issue came about after the county required voters to designate a single voter for land with several owners deemed as a company or corporation before the designee could receive an election ballot.

The FJBC commissioners and legal council plan to work with county election officials to review options to reschedule the election if it’s possible in an effort to give voters more time to get the paperwork in to designate a single voter.

Lake County Election officials would like the county attorney or judge to rule on the matter before the election is officially canceled.

Correction

In the April 20 story “Irrigation candidates discuss issues,” Jerry Laskody was credited with saying that the Montana-CSKT Water Compact puts irrigators under tribal law without the ability to resolve issues in the U.S Government. Laskody would like that sentence clarified to say that the CSKT Water Compact puts irrigators under the Water Management Board that is above the law and cannot be held accountable for its actions. He added that the board cannot be sued for monetary damages if it takes action that harms individuals.
