RONAN – It’s not too late to try and win a ribbon in the Lake County Fair.

“People can sign up with open class entries until Thursday,” said Fair Director Tim Marchant. The deadline to turn in an application is July 21 at 4 p.m.

Open class includes things like photography, roses, plants, vegetables, woodworking, sewing projects and other items.

“If you don’t know if your roses or vegetables will be ready, sign up anyway,” he said. “It’s better to sign up and not enter than to try and sign up late.”

Winners will get a small cash prize and a ribbon.

“It’s more about bragging rights,” he said. “Bragging rights last all year.”

Marchant won a ribbon and bragging rights for an off-white rose he entered last year.

“It was growing in my yard,” he said, and thought it might do well at the fair.

Entries will be displayed in the newly remodeled horticulture building that was once a bus barn.

“This is the first time since the remodel that it will be in the fair,” he said of the building.

The fair also features the usual critters including cows, sheep and pigs. 4-H entries are due by Thursday, July 14. People can view the animals starting on Wednesday, July 27, to Saturday, July 30, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. “The market animals will be judged by Thursday,” he said.

This year, Pioneer Days are the week after the fair, but the new cowboy style Ranch Rodeo games will be available on Saturday, July 30, at 1 p.m. with a steak dinner and dance to follow. The event is family friendly with a separate beer garden.

“Several teams will do cowboy roping,” he said of the games. “These are skills franchers use in their jobs, but anybody can participate. You do need a team.”

During the fair, the different 4-H groups will sell a variety of food items and drinks.

“This is their fundraiser,” he said, explaining that the clubs use the funding for different projects.

The Lake County Fairgrounds are located at 300 Third Ave NW in Ronan.
