News from the Area VI Agency on Aging

POLSON — At this time of year at the Area VI Agency on Aging, several clients usually walk in to the center with the same look in their eyes: Family members come to visit in the prime of the beautiful summer season, and find that their parent/relative/friend who lives here is struggling with the limitations of advancing age. The agency can help identify resources available in the area, and also financial assistance they may not be aware of.

The Area VI Agency on Aging is an aging and disability resource center. The center has trained information and assistance staff in their Polson office on the second floor of the Salish building. Help is also available in Lincoln, Mineral, and Sanders Counties. Although it is best to call for an appointment, they are available at the Polson office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. but closed from noon to 1 p.m. for a lunch hour. If a client knows what they are looking for, they can provide a list of services available with phone number. If a client wants more in depth help, there is an options counseling service available. A counselor can meet with family members, including the person needing assistance, to help figure out what would be best for the aging loved one. There is no fee for most services except the options counseling which typically costs $50 dollars.

The agency also specializes in dealing with Medicare issues. Their State Health Insurance Assistance Program counselors help sort out confusing details of Medicare and can help explain bills. The Senior Medicare Patrol can investigate questionable claims or activities.

The Area VI Agency on Aging in a non-profit, non-government agency. The Polson office can be reached at 406-883-7284 and the other counties can be reached by calling 1-800-266-4188.
