POLSON — The Polson Business Community is holding a new competition to encourage people to stroll and shop downtown, and to make the shopping area “fall-ish and inviting,” according to Jackie Cripe, of the PBC and owner of Jackie M’s on Main Street.

To participate in the “Celebrate Fall Downtown Decorate the Bench Competition” with a grand prize of $200 PBC Dollars, go to Navigator Travel between now and Oct. 7 and choose one of 20 benches to decorate with a fall theme.

Decorations such as ribbon, twine or covered wire should withstand the weather but not damage the bench. Participants will receive a list of approved decorations when they sign up. No paint, exposed wire or crepe paper allowed.

“We don’t want to mess up the benches,” Cripe said, adding that it might be nice to leave room for a person to sit.

Anyone may participate including individuals, organizations, churches, school clubs or families. The public will vote Oct.15-21.

The first place winner will receive $200 in PBC Dollars, second place $100 in PBC dollars, and third place $80 in PBC Dollars to be spent at any of the more than 25 PBC member’s businesses.

“Instead of a gift certificate to a specific business, they can use it any way they want to,” Cripe said.

Winners will be announced at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 22 during another new event, the Downtown Open House, held on Third Avenue East in front of Hallmark and the south side of Navigator Travel.

Free chili and cornbread will be available at the open house party. “We hope to get music and a bonfire,” Cripe said. Decorations must be removed Nov. 3-4. For more information, call Jackie at 406-883- 5800 or Evonne at 406- 883-5222.
