The Vikings have begun the new season with successful play from a young squad, averaging 50 points and 400 total yards per game. Although coach Mike Krahn can count the number of seniors on one hand after graduating six last year, the 19-member squad has united in short time, according to Krahn.

“The players have worked hard this summer and this season and have come together as a team,” Krahn said. “We expected some growing pains, but have come together quickly.”

On Friday the Vikings made some waves in their 40-12 victory over the Victor Pirates.

In the first 15 seconds, senior Jared Doty scored a 52-yard touchdown run on the first offensive play. Doty followed with two more touchdowns in the second and sophomore quarterback Landers Smith sealed the second-quarter scoring with a 26-yard pass to senior Zane Haflinger, ending the first half with a 28-0 lead.

But the Pirates weren’t ready to walk the plank as Victor’s Colt Neville ran in two unanswered touchdowns before Smith responded with a Viking TD on a 22-yard run.

The Vikings capped the game with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Doty.

“Landers Smith has shown much improvement at quarterback. He is a sophomore who is playing quarterback for the first time,” Krahn explained. “Also, our offensive line are all first-time starters and have really risen to the occasion and played well.”

Charlo completed two 2-point-after attempts while Victor could not convert after their touchdowns.

One week earlier Charlo faced Flint Creek, the co-op team of Drummond and Philipsburg. The Vikings came away with the 54-6 win.

“A big reason for our success is our football-savvy players who can play multiple positions and are willing to play wherever and whenever needed,” Krahn said.

The Vikings (3-1) travel to Darby (2-1) for a conference game against the Tigers on Friday, Sept. 23. The game begins at 7 p.m.
