As Battle Horse played the processional, 14 graduating seniors at Two Eagle River School walked to the stage on May 20, wearing silver and red robes. Classmate and fellow graduate Elysia Segura did not walk since her baby was born earlier in the day.
Graduation speaker Jason Heavy Runner, a 1993 Two Eagle alumnus, advised the graduates to embrace and adapt to change to be successful. Change doesn’t mean compromising principles, he added.
He also told graduates to remember their manners, an underrated tool in reaching success. Heavy Runner recalled his experience after he graduated from high school.
“I knew I wanted to be in college, but I didn’t know how to be in college,” he said.
So he walked over to the Salish Kootenai College campus, went into the Michel Building, politely introduced himself and asked for help.
As parting advice, Heavy Runner said, “Honor your ancestors; honor their sacrifices; honor your elders for their knowledge; honor your family; and honor each other. You guys did something great today.”
Math teacher Allen Lundgren also spoke to the graduates, calling them an exceptional group.
“You’re why we are all here — the joy and the heartache,” he said.
Retiring Two Eagle Principal Clarice King presented each graduate with his or her diploma and a hug.
